How to Reset Audio and Video Website Permissions

This guide will walk you through resetting microphone and camera permissions that you've granted or denied to websites in various web browsers. This is useful if you've accidentally blocked a site, want to revoke access, or a site isn't prompting for permissions correctly.

General Tip: Often, the quickest way to manage permissions for the current site you are on is to click the icon (usually a lock or a settings/tune icon) in the address bar to the left of the website URL.

1. Google Chrome
  • Navigate to the Website: Open the website for which you want to reset permissions.
  • Click the Lock/Site Info Icon: In the address bar, to the left of the website URL, click the lock icon or sometimes an info icon (ⓘ) or a tune/settings icon.
  • Site Settings: In the dropdown that appears, click on Site settings (or sometimes Permissions).
  • Camera & Microphone: This will open a new tab with detailed settings for that site. Scroll down to find Camera and Microphone.
  • Reset Permission: Next to Camera and Microphone, you'll see a dropdown menu (it might say Allow, Ask, or Block). Click it and choose Ask (default) or Reset permission to make the site ask you again next time.
  • - Alternatively, you can directly change it to Allow or Block here.
  • Reload the Page: Go back to the website's tab and reload the page for the changes to take effect.

2. Mozilla Firefox
  • Navigate to the Website: Open the website.
  • Click the Permissions Icon: In the address bar, to the left of the URL, you'll see a permissions icon (it might look like a shield , a lock , or sliders/controls). Click it.
  • Clear Permissions: If the site has already been granted or denied permission, you might see Allowed or Blocked next to Use the Camera or Use the Microphone. Click the X next to each permission you want to reset. This will make Firefox ask you again.
  • Reload the Page: Reload the website.

3. Microsoft Edge
(Microsoft Edge is based on Chromium, so the steps are very similar to Google Chrome)
  • Navigate to the Website: Open the website.
  • Click the Lock/Site Info Icon: In the address bar, click the lock icon to the left of the URL.
  • Permissions for this site: In the dropdown, click on Permissions for this site.
  • Camera & Microphone: In the panel that appears on the right (or a new tab), find Camera and Microphone.
  • Reset/Change Permission: Use the dropdown menu next to each to select Ask (default), Allow, or Block. Choosing Ask or Reset will clear the current setting.
  • Reload the Page: Close the settings panel/tab and reload the website.

4. Apple Safari, On macOS
  • Navigate to the Website: Open the website in Safari.
  • Safari Menu: In the top menu bar, click Safari > Settings... (or Preferences...).
  • Websites Tab: Click on the Websites tab in the settings window.
  • Select Camera/Microphone: In the left sidebar, select Camera or Microphone.
  • Manage Permissions: - You'll see a list of websites that have asked for permission.
    - For each website, you can use the dropdown menu to choose Ask, Deny, or Allow. Selecting Ask will make Safari prompt you again.
    - You can also remove a website from the list by selecting it and clicking the Remove button (this will reset its permissions).
    - Default for Other Websites: At the bottom, you can set the default behavior for When visiting other websites.
    - Close Settings & Reload: Close the settings window and reload the webpage.
5. Apple Safari, On iOS (iPhone/iPad):
Permissions on iOS are often managed more globally through the Settings app, but Safari itself also has some controls. For a Specific Site (Limited Reset):
  • Open Safari and go to the website.
  • Tap the AA icon in the address bar (or the puzzle piece icon on iPadOS for extensions/settings).
  • Tap Website Settings.
  • Here you can toggle Camera and Microphone to Ask, Deny, or Allow. Setting it to Ask is effectively a reset for the next visit.

Remember to always reload the webpage after changing permission settings for them to take effect.
